You can make ANY dance look vulgar. Bellydance included. However, if you have picked a good dance instructor, she will mention all the "No No’s" like, keeping your knees together at all times, never shaking your chest in someone’s face, making sure you wear full coverage matching underwear or some type of leggings or harem pants.
I would suggest you watch the teacher or some of her students perform. If you do not like what you see, question her about her teaching and performance style. If you do not agree with her methods, seek out a different instructor.
It isn’t very sexual especially considering that most of the dancers that I have seen are not very attractive. Go watch a class before you sign her up maybe.
Not particularly. It can be rather suggestive, but there is nothing vulgar about it. Then again, I detest every aspect of the the sex taboo, so maybe my opinion isn’t very valuable to you.
OMG….NO! It’s very empowering for females. It began as an art by women for women and evolved into family entertainment where the guys would dance and some would play instruments and the girls would dance too.
Unless you consider a strong female who is proud to be famale vulgar…
No, it’s not vulgar. It may be suggestive to some, but only those who don’t know any better or don’t care. But if she doesn’t plan on preforming in public it doesn’t matter. It’s wonderful exercise. It’s very empowering. It builds confidence, and self esteem. It’s a good learning opportunity. And it’s addictive. But it’s not vulgar.
i dont think so… i think it might be considered a sexy dance or provocative by some ppl. How old is ur daughter, i mean, u shouldnt start a little girl in that kind of dance. do some research b4 her class, youtube has videos on it and/or wikipedia, just search it. u could also ask the dance instructor for some info or sit in on the 1st class if its allowed to c 4 urself
I bought some dvds on it. There’s nothing for you to worry about, no vulgarities, no sexual connotations.
It’s a lot of hip, leg and stomach work. It’s very relaxing and enjoyful in my opinion but hard work as well. I think she’ll benefit from it. It teaches isolated muscle movement just like an exercise workout.
Besides, she’ll be practicing at home and if you don’t like what you see you as the parent have the right to say ‘no more!’

There are children’s/ teen bellydance classes at the YMCA & at city Parks & Recreation centers, for goodness sake ! Evil, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. See these bellydance video & their websites for good, wholesome dance & exercise fun.
Absolutely not!! Hollywood sensationalized and scandalized belly dance, so people have misperceptions of it. I started with my belly dance instructor over 7 years ago. My daughter started a couple of years after I did, when she was 15. If I believed it was inappropriate, I would never have allowed her to take classes. My dance instructor’s twin daughters were already awesome dancers when I first started taking classes with her. They just turned 16, so they were almost 9 when I first saw them perform.
The only time you might have a vulgar "belly dance" performance, is if a stripper dons a belly dance costume and PRETENDS to be a belly dancer. Belly dancers do NOT strip… EVER.
Suhaila is a second generation bellydancer. She learned from her mother Jamila Salimpour.
