Belly Dancing Costume

A belly dancing costume varies by its ethnic region (country) of origin such as Egypt or the Middle East.  The type of dance style plays a huge factor, also.  While Egyptian dance is more subtle in its movements, Arabian and Turkish dance are highly accentuated and sexy in movement.  Over the last several decades as belly dancing became more popular around the world, simple “traditional” belly dancing costumes were embellished with beads, sparkly sequins, coins and more.

A belly dancing costume is a matter of personal taste.  The dancer may wish to remain true to the customs of the region from which the music and dance style in her performance originated.  Or, depending upon the venue, a more theatrical version may be desirable as audiences seek to be entertained by not only the music and talents of the dancer, but also by colorful, elegant and even erotic costumes.

Common Belly Dancing Costume Types

Bedlah – This type of belly dancing costume is what most people envision when thinking about belly dancing.  This bedlah costume consists of a fitted top/bra embellished with beads, sequins, tassels and/or coins.  A matching belt is part of the ensemble.  Usually the belt is attached to a skirt.  Harem pants instead of a skirt are a little less popular.  This type of costume is worn for entertainment/show-biz types of performances and is therefore commonly called a “cabaret-style” of costuming.  Decorative attention is focused on the top and belt as they are the focal point of a dancer’s undulations.  In Egypt, a body stocking is worn to cover the abdomen.

Badlah – A badlah dress is a more modest costume and is similar to a one-piece evening gown or sheath-style dress that can be worn with a hip scarf or belt as opposed to the separate top and skirt of the glitzy bedlah.  Badlahs may also have cut-outs in the fabric exposing parts of the thighs, legs, or rib cage.  Badlahs also come in two-piece sets with the skirt consisting of form-fitting stretchy fabic with a slit up one or both sides.
